About Damascus:
Historical Damascus steel is a hot-forged steel made by repeatedly folding and welding two or more different steels until a pattern emerges. It was used in Middle Eastern sword-making from about 1100 to 1700 AD.
Damascus Steel is thought to have originated from Wootz Steel, which originated in India and Sri Lanka and later spread to Persia.
The steel crafted for this piece was made using forge pattern welding, which replicates the appearance of damascus, but uses modern techniques and steels.
About this piece:
This piece was hand-forged at the Hanging Pig Forge, located in the grounds of the Sacred Cedar Shrine in Western Wisconsin, using steel reclaimed from 1800fs horse-drawn farm equiment, modern steel cable, high carbon tool & spring steel, and bicycle chains.
It was shaped using a combination of hot drifting, hot and cold cutting, filing, sanding, and aggressive buffing. "Drifting" is a historical blacksmithing technique that opens holes in metal without cutting, and if allowed to will twist and distort the metal, adding to the damascus pattern. Thus each piece will have a unique pattern & shape.
Care:
There is enough nickel in the steel in this piece that it should be fairly rust- resistant, but is not rust or stain proof. A periodic cleaning with any steel or jewelry cleaner is recommended.
Harsh cleaning including sanding or aggressive buffing may cloud or diminish the appearance of the Damascus grain. Should the grain be clouded or the piece rust, you may email me and I will be happy to refresh the surface for you.
